Jinkies! Did you lose your glasses again? Having trouble finding things for this cosplay? Well, let’s unravel this mystery… My personal preference is to use the Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island or the first four Direct to Video movies for the entire gang, as the outfits for everyone will be easier to find!
Glasses: I think a lot of people miss this detail when they cosplay as Velma, but her glasses actually have a very strong blue tint to them. I don’t recommend going overboard, but I think it would be neat to capture that when you do her cosplay. I found a pair of sunglasses that have such a light tint to them that they could easily be mistaken for glasses here. I also found a clip from a movie where she swapped glasses with another person that did not have a tint to their glasses. If you are wanting to just do clear lenses, however, this pair should work.
Turtleneck Sweater: Not the hardest thing to find, believe it or not! A orange turtle neck sweater can be found here on Amazon! It actually didn’t take me long to find this.
Skirt: If we are keeping with the movie versions of Velma, then you won’t want to get a skirt with ruffles. Instead you will want a plain skirt like this one. I’ve purchased that skirt before in grey for a Gwen Stacy cosplay and highly recommend it. The quality is very good and it is wider than it looks in the picture which gives it less of that pencil skirt feel. If you want to go for traditional, then a simple red pleated skirt like this one should do nicely.
Socks:You will need some knee high socks for Velma if you are doing the traditional version of her outfit. If not though, you can simple roll these socks down instead. I recommend that because if you decide to switch out your outfit or raise them to be more recognizable, you have that option.
Shoes: I really liked these shoes for Velma mostly because they are in the right collar and style but also because the price point is pretty reasonable for loafers. I saw some that were in the $100 range as I was searching. My suggestion, however, is to remove the tassels on the shoes. Again, these shoes are closer to the ones that Velma wears in the movies. She wears Mary Jane shoes otherwise.
Makeup/Wig: Don’t forget to use some makeup tricks to give yourself freckles! Less is more in this particular cosplay as putting too much makeup on will make you seem less and less like Velma. Style a wig in the proper fashion to get her haircut.
And once you look like Velma, bribe your friends with some Scooby Snacks to come with you to the nearest convention! Beware of ghosts though!
